And he said, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

1 Kings 19:11-12, RSV

I think we all have some point in our lives where we act like maybe God doesn’t exist, or He doesn’t care. Some of us act it while knowing that God exists, but some of us act it and start to question God’s existence. Maybe it’s because we’re praying for so many things and it doesn’t look like our prayers are being answered, or even heard. Maybe it’s for a different reason.

Keep up them prayers, God answers in His own time. Trust in Him because He knows what is best. He knows everything. But He is here. He is present in more ways you can imagine. Maybe you just have to look around you and pay attention to the little things that He blesses us with. Maybe it’s your family, the epic trees in your neighbourhood, or light traffic when you need to get somewhere fast. Maybe it’s the existence of coffee (or chocolate, or sugar). Maybe it’s the small breeze He sends through your window so you don’t steam in the summer night, as in my case.

I remember one night during a heatwave a couple of weeks ago. I sat down on my bed and quickly prayed something like, “Lord please send the wind this way so I don’t die of the heat.” It was a very casual, very informal, very quick prayer and to be frank with you I didn’t think anything would actually happen. But in a couple of minutes there came a nice breeze through my window and I remember feeling wowed. Surprised. Shocked. And for maybe the first time I felt that feeling when you get a prayer answered. I didn’t dwell on it much since I went to sleep. But don’t worry, I did thank Him for it.

Now that I look back on it, I guess I felt like God was saying in a quiet way that He cares about me, that He loves me, that He hears me, that He is present in my life even though I don’t feel it all the time. And it is the same for you.

“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? […] Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothes like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

Matthew 6:26, 28-30

This comes from Jesus Christ Himself. If God takes care of the flowers and animals in this way, how much more does He take care of us? Think about how many bad things you’ve been spared from today, yesterday, years ago. Think about how many blessings you’ve been given today, yesterday, years ago. God is present in every single moment and every single part of our lives. Sure, you may not have visions or witness miracles, but remember that the Lord can show us Himself in the seemingly smallest of things. Keep an eye out for Him. Because He is there. He is here.
