If you haven’t read my blog staff bio on this website, you may not know I am a competitive dancer. I train over 15 hours a week in all styles of dance- from tap to jazz, and even high kick and pom with my high school team.
You may be asking, “OK, but what does this have to do with God?” Well, it has everything to do with Him! As you may have judged by the title of this piece, through dance I have managed to connect even more with Jesus. It may be hard to find Him in a couple of rhinestones or a “ronde de jambe” (for you non-dancers, that is a ballet step!), but anyone who has met me knows I love a good challenge. So, I accepted this daunting challenge – and wow, in what amazing ways did I find Him!
Through dance, I have found an even deeper way to connect with Him – praying before I go onstage, thanking Him for the beautiful costumes I get to wear, and remembering the life he gave me as a take deep breaths throughout a beautiful lyrical piece. Not only has this stronger connection with God through dance made me appreciate the beauty of the sport I do more, but it has even made me a better dancer in some ways. I now feel less tense before a performance because I know He is on my side. I have learned to breathe more in my dancing, leading to a better performance (and better stamina now that my muscles are getting more oxygen!).
By taking time to appreciate the art form I participate in, his omnipresence has been made know to me, just as this Bible quote reminds us: “Am I a God near at hand only—oracle of the Lord— and not a God far off? Can anyone hide in secret without my seeing them?—oracle of the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth?—oracle of the Lord.” (Jeremiah 23:23-24)
